Assane Timbo (Erik) and Marilyne Fontaine (Simone) in "Peutimporte" by Marius von Mayenburg, directed by Robin Ormond. LOUIE SALTO

The wearing down of a couple to the bone, the place of the man, that of the woman, the education of their children, ambition, rivalries, jealousy, renunciations and desires, pacts made then betrayed, the mental burden, the unsaid and the rehashing: Peuimporte , a text by the German author Marius von Mayenburg, draws from the daily life of a couple the corrosive essence of a play that one cannot imagine being played in any other way than with knives drawn.

Mission accomplished beautifully by two hard-working actors who take on the role of Erik, he, and Simone, she. Marilyne Fontaine and Assane Timbo are directed at La Scala Provence by the play's translator, Robin Ormond. This artist, born in 1993, has created few shows to date, but he demonstrates an astonishing mastery of language, treating its corporeality in detail. And rightly so: the words here produce a haunting sound that has as much, if not more, effect than the meaning conveyed. This common sound made by two beings who live together and who, even in disagreement, seem to speak with one voice.
